Art events: Raffaello, 500th anniversary

art events

This strange and distressing year 2020 marks the anniversary of the death, 500 year ago of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino.

One of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, in his short life (1483-1520) he produced some of the most extraordinary masterpieces of the time, and of all times.

From the first works produced when he was just 16 in Città di Castello, he rapidly developed into a mature artist at a young age especially during his Florentine period, when he painted some of his iconic Madonnas, like the Madonna of the Goldfinch and the Madonna of the meadow, and much more.
During the final years of his life, spent in Rome, he decorated with magnificent frescoes of the Rooms of the apartment of Pope Julius II in the Vatican, and worked as well on various architectural projects.

A grand show, unfortunately disrupted by the pandemic but now ongoing until August 30th in Rome at the Scuderie del Quirinale, celebrates his life and work with many masterpieces, see below the video of the exhibition:

Also the Uffizi museum in Florence celebrated the anniversary with some virtual tours about his life and work

and specific artworks like the Madonna of the Goldfinch
